Off-Road Driving Instruction!
Have an off-road vehicle but have never really understood it's capabilities and/or limits? Want to drive your vehicle off-road but don't know where to begin? That's were we come in! We offer low pressure instruction and learning with both "classroom" dialog and plenty of hands on driving!
"I am a first time Jeep owner and I had searched the web for real off road instruction. Well long story short, a vacation visit to Smoky Mountains area resulted in what I would say was nothing short of great experience. I gotta say Dan, the proprietor, has the knowledge, attitude, and character that instills confidence. The instruction course covered a lot; from my vehicle's capabilities, to making smart decisions, to various techniques. What was awesome was that I was able to apply what I learned hands on out on the trails. If you truly want an off road mountain terrain adventure regardless of your experience level. Dan is your man for sure. When I am in the area again I will have to take on some of his tougher trails. Thanks again Dan!"
If you have an off road vehicle but have never been trained in off road driving, you are NOT ALONE and DO NOT be intimidated! Our training and instruction cover a crawl - walk - run approach and includes:
- Review of YOUR vehicle specifics and how it works and functions in 4Low to get the most from your rig, recommended equipment to have on hand, off road assessment and route selection, equipment management / vehicle survivability, obstacle approach, and more!
- After classroom time, we hit the trails... I lead out in mine, and you drive YOUR vehicle and get hands on trail time! If you do not have a GMRS radio, you borrow one so we can communicate and dialog about upcoming obstacles, preferred lines, and more. Often, we stop for discussion and application of learned skills as well.

No, you don't have to have the newest of off road rigs to enjoy getting off the pavement! Success off-road is about knowledge, not always about new gadgetry!
As a matter of fact, we ran this instructional course for a long time with our old stock '76 CJ5! Then we went for a couple years with a 2008 JK Unlimited Rubicon in the instructional and guiding lineup. For a time we went with a long time family vehicle with some mild off road upgrades, a 2001 Isuzu Trooper! We then rolled in a 2017 Toyota Tacoma, and now have a 21 Jeep Gladiator Rubicon. Constantly proving a point... off road fun, preparedness, and success is not associated with how much money HAS to be spent or the manufacturer of the rig. We've helped folks with their $15k rig just the same as folks with their $80k rig. Whatever you drive, we'd love to have you out and be of assistance! This course will set you on the road to success and confidence off-road!

Prior Jeep Owner: "BEST place ever to learn about the capabilities of your jeep! I would recommend this to every Jeep owner. I have had three jeeps and never had the confidence or even a lot of desire to off-road. Dan changed all of that. From his great teaching method and patience with every question, awesome trails (which didn't even look possible at first), to the extremely well thought out and very hands on classroom type instruction that used my own fairly stock Jeep, to the muddy hills (going up and just as importantly coming down) that i would have NEVER previously attempted on my own. I left with confidence, was all smiles, and can't wait to get back. There were no negatives and the price was more than reasonable. Given the Ex-SEAL marketing i was a little worried about his approach being too militaristic but he quickly had me laughing and focused like only great teachers can do. Hurry before this secret in the Smokies gets found out and you get put on a waiting list." TM- Knoxville, TN
New Jeep owner: "First, you did a great job making me feel totally at ease, which I really appreciated, and I liked the one on one/conversation approach to the instruction. Being new to Jeep ownership and to off-roading, your instruction did a good job of explaining why my Jeep is so capable. The course offered a lot of variety and different challenges, and I look forward to getting back to hit the trails we didn't make it to the first time I was there! Can't wait to get back to Cosby, Tennessee!" Troy - VA
Recent Instructional Feedback:
"We had an incredible experience with Dan at Outdoors in the Smokies! The knowledge he possesses as well as the amount of time and energy he gave us was top notch! As 1st time wheelers, we walked into his classroom with a basic knowledge base. By the time we left he had us on the obstacle courses. Dan spent the time to help us understand what our rig was capable of and some tricks of the trade. I truly have to say, it was a day well spent in good company. For anyone who wants to learn how to wheel safely and have a lot of fun, this is your place!" - Katie OH
"Came out to the Smokies this week in our new Jeep. After exploring the mountains for the first couple of days we had the good fortune to be able to set up some Jeep instructional driving time with Dan to just scratch the surface of our vehicle's capabilities. Wow! Absolute blast and time and money well spent. Great guy and great instructor. I would recommend Outdoors in the Smokies to anyone. Hope to come back for round 2 the next time we come down to Tennessee. Thanks again, Dan." - Rob, Wendy, Sam & Max IL
"I did the off road training with Dan today. We spent 5 hours in total, 1/2 the time was classroom, and the other 1/2 was on the trails. I was apprehensive at first, since my Jeep is a manual transmission, but Dan stopped me, and gave me 1 very important pointer on using the clutch, and that was all it took for the light to go on! From that point on, I had a blast, and gained everything I was hoping to gain, from the training, including understanding the capabilities of the Jeep, as well as gaining the confidence I need to go out with others, and not feel like a newbee! Thank you Dan, it was well worth every penny spent!!!" - Rob TN
"... I wanted to take a moment to thank Dan for a fantastic weekend of wheeling on his property. There was a huge variety of climbs, descents, traverses, rock and log crossings etc. There is something here for every rig out there. Dan was the nicest guy you could imagine and I could not have been happier with the instruction and the driving. My son and I got an experience we won't soon forget." Ben & Brian FL
